A new childcare provider in Gorton
Manchester City Council decided to stop offering childcare from a large number of Sure Start centres across the city. That included Gorton, Openshaw, Droylsden, Newton Heath, Levenshulme and Longsight. The council put the change down to budget cuts. For families in inner-city neighbourhoods, it landed hard. Private childcare is considerably more expensive than the provision the council had offered many working families.
Sutton Road Nursery was set up from that change. The nearby Sacred Heart Children’s Centre was due to stop its childcare and keep only other services. Families in the area needed somewhere else to go. Kerry and Nicola believed they could make a difference. They took the management, and most of the staff, and stayed in an area they had deep links with, where they had already been providing childcare for more than 15 years.
After a long look, they secured a property on Sutton Road in Gorton that had itself once been a Sure Start centre. They invested heavily in the equipment the children needed, and opened on 7 October 2013, once Ofsted registration was in place.
The neighbourhood looked after the new nursery. The team has always been grateful for that welcome on Sutton Road itself, and in the area in general. Parents and carers are part of the reason the nursery can do the work it set out to do.
